Arizona is known for its heavy concentration of truck traffic, which can increase the risk of accidents involving these large vehicles. The victims of big rig crashes will most likely need legal representation, the type available from our firm Gary Phillips Accident Law that deals with these types of cases all the time.

It is equally important to understand the causes of truck accidents and how to deal with the mishaps that regularly occur. A big rig can weigh up to 80 tons, which is approximately 20 times that of the average automobile. Their large sizes also make big rigs less maneuverable and more difficult to stop, and the consequences of a collision can be catastrophic for the occupants of a smaller vehicle.

In 2016, accidents involving large trucks throughout Arizona claimed 69 lives and injured hundreds. A federal study established three principle types of accidents involving large trucks. Approximately a third of the wrecks involved the vehicle departing from its lane or, in some cases, running completely off the road. The next most prevalent type involved a loss of control, often related to a shift in the cargo load. Collisions with other vehicles accounted for some 20 percent of the mishaps involving large trucks. In terms of the underlying issues that precipitated these accidents, speeding was found to be a significant causative factor. Driver distraction or inattention was another major issue. The physical impairment of drivers, who in some cases merely fell asleep at the wheel, was found to precipitate about 10 percent of the large truck crashes.

Determining culpability is not as easy in truck mishaps as in accidents involving smaller vehicles. The crash may have resulted from a direct error by the driver or by the failure of the operating company to follow a specific state or federal law. In load-shifting cases, the company responsible for the cargo could be responsible. In cases involving mechanical failures, the manufacturer of the vehicle or one of its components could be held liable. Other accidents may result in a combination of factors, including the actions of other motorists.

After an accident involving a large truck, it is important to give medical attention to those who have suffered physical harm. A minor injury could have serious consequences if it does not receive immediate care. It is equally important to notify the local law enforcement agency, which will conduct an investigation of the accident. Victims and their families should consider seeking legal assistance after a truck accident.
